Sam G & Priscilla McCall Family Scholarships

SWCC recently received a gift and commitment letter from the Sam G. & Priscilla McCall Family to provide nearly $1.5 million in scholarships to SWCC students over the next 10-12 years.
Recipients of the Sam G. & Priscilla McCall Family Scholarships will be residents of Tazewell County.  They may be first or second year students of any age, in any curriculum but must be full-time students who demonstrate financial need.

Sam McCall, Jr. was a native of Richlands and a graduate of Richlands High School.  Following his honorable discharge from the U.S. Army, McCall embarked on a sales career in Texas working for companies such as Quaker Oats, M&M Mars, Inc. and Kimberly-Clark.  His interest in real estate prompted the establishment of the Sam McCall Company that became the largest commercial real estate office in Tarrant County, Fort Worth, TX.  During this time, McCall and his partners developed and built the Oxford Square Apartments in Richlands. It was also in Texas that McCall met and married Priscilla, who would become invaluable as his partner in business and in life for 20 years.

From Texas, the McCall’s moved to Greensboro where they established C&S Distributing and a chain of lingerie stores with locations in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.  Sam McCall was active in numerous Shrine Temple organizations in Texas and North Carolina and various other civic and charitable organizations throughout his lifetime.

We are so pleased to learn of this additional gift from the McCall’s who have been long-time supporters of SWCC and had recently gifted the Foundation with nearly $300,000 to support their previously established scholarship” said Estepp.  The SWCC College President continued, “I commend the level of generosity of the McCall Family and their gift to SWCC and our students.”

Providing scholarships to students who would otherwise be unable to achieve their goal of attaining a degree is truly a remarkable gift that has lasting effects on both the students and our communities.  The McCall’s philanthropy is an excellent example of leaving a lasting legacy through thoughtful estate planning,” Susan Lowe commented.
