About Your Student Government Association

The Student Government Association serves as the student body’s voice at SWCC.  The SGA Senate is comprised of fifteen senators.

Student Experiences:

Leadership Training and Opportunities

Community Service

Consultation with Student Peers, Faculty, Staff, and Administration

Support of Student Engagement (Clubs, Sports, and other Campus Organizations)

Cultural Enrichment Opportunities

How Do I Know If I Qualify?

To qualify as a senator you must have a 2.0 GPA (from your most recent institution: such as high school, Southwest Virginia Community College, or transfer institution).

You must be able to meet on Thursdays from 12:15 PM to 1:05 PM in the Fall and Spring semesters. SGA does not meet in the Summer term.

If elected, you must be able to continue to participate and engage in the meetings for the duration of the term of office. Failure to attend three consecutive meetings can result in a review of your ongoing participation in Student Government Association as it is a graded course.

You must also maintain a 2.0 average while in office.

Benefits of SGA

It has been proven that involved students have a more successful college experience. SGA gives you the opportunity to build valuable relationships with faculty, staff, and other SWCC students.

Transfer schools desire students who are involved.  Some even offer scholarships to SGA officers.  Employers look for applicants who have leadership and organizational experience.

The Southwest Virginia Community College Student Government Association works to support the campus-wide initiative of diversity, equity, and inclusion in its decisions, actions, and considerations for such. SWCC SGA also promotes the SWCC campus mission, vision, and those expressed by the Virginia Community College System.

EOE/AA Statement: SWCC SGA also does not discriminate on the basis of age, ancestry, color, disability, gender, identity or expression, genetic information, HIV/AIDS status, military status, national origin, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or veteran status in its programs, activities, employment, and admission.
