This program prepares you for entry‑level registered nursing roles while keeping education affordable and close to home.
Designed to serve students across Tazewell, Russell, Buchanan, and parts of Dickenson counties, the program follows the Virginia Community College System’s common nursing curriculum. You’ll gain the knowledge and hands‑on experience needed to provide safe, competent nursing care in today’s complex healthcare environments.

Accreditation and Approval

The Nursing (AAS) program is approved by the Virginia State Board of Nursing and accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). The program currently holds continuing accreditation status, giving students and families confidence in the quality and credibility of the education.

Learning Focus

Throughout the program, you’ll develop essential nursing competencies, including client‑centered care, safety, clinical judgment, collaboration, professional behavior, and quality improvement. Coursework and clinical experiences are structured to prepare you for the realities of modern healthcare and lifelong learning in the profession.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the program are prepared for registered nursing roles in a variety of healthcare settings. Employment opportunities may include hospitals, nursing homes, health departments, physician offices, clinics, home health agencies, public schools, day care centers, and civil service positions.

Admission and Application Process

Admission to the Nursing (AAS) program is selective. In addition to meeting general college admission requirements, applicants must demonstrate readiness in English, math, and science and complete the ATI TEAS entrance exam with a minimum national percentile score of 45. TEAS scores are accepted if taken within the last five years and must be completed at an approved live proctoring site.
A completed nursing program application and required documentation must be submitted by the February 15 deadline for the academic year you wish to enter. Qualified applicants from the college’s service region receive priority consideration.

Options for Licensed Practical Nurses

Licensed Practical Nurses may be eligible for an LPN‑to‑RN transition option. Accepted LPNs who meet specific coursework and experience requirements may enter through a summer bridge pathway designed to support progression into RN coursework.

Clinical and Program Requirements

Because clinical learning is a core part of nursing education, students must meet health, immunization, background check, and CPR certification requirements set by clinical agencies. These standards help protect patients, students, and healthcare partners while ensuring you are ready for direct patient care experiences.

Take the Next Step

Choosing a nursing program is a big decision — and you don’t have to navigate it alone. Connect with an Advisor to talk through admission requirements, application steps, and whether the Nursing (AAS) program is the right fit for your goals.

In addition to the college application, you will need to submit a separate Nursing program application.
