Kayaking Merit Badge and Kayaking BSA Award

A one-day outing where the participant learns the basics of kayaking. The instruction provided covers the requirements for the Kayaking BSA Award and the Kayaking Merit Badge. The outing will involve at least a 5-mile river trip*. Kayaking equipment and the instructor will be provided.

Each participant will:

  • Describe the types of kayaks and name the parts
  • Demonstrate selection and use of kayak paddles
  • Cover principles of Safe Trip Afloat
  • Demonstrate proper use of a PFD and illustrate its importance
  • Demonstrate knowledge of what to do in the event of a capsize

Cost per participant: $49.00*

Note: Before participating, scouts must have successfully completed the BSA swimmer test.

Leave No Trace Trainer and Wilderness Survival Merit Badge

A two-day, one night excursion with the opportunity to become a Leave No Trace Trainer and earn the Wilderness Survival Merit Badge. Equipment needed and instructor will be provided.

The Leave No Trace Trainer Course examines the impacts of human activity on the outdoor environment, specifically lands used for backpacking, hiking, and camping. Addresses the history and philosophy of the Leave No Trace movement, regarding sustainable backcountry and “at-home” practices, visitor demands and resource management challenges.

  • Discuss hazards and seven priorities for backcountry survival while maintaining morale and avoiding panic.
  • Describe survival steps in a variety of situations.
  • Describe and/or illustrate their survival kits and the items they would bring with them on outings.
  • Discuss safety and how to avoid hazards.
  • Demonstrate proper preparation and appropriate equipment for the outing.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and properly practice the seven principles of Leave No Trace.

Cos per participant: $99.00*

Note: Pre-Requisites exist that must be completed before the two-day excursion.

Climbing Merit Badge

A one-day outing where the participant learns the basics of climbing and rappelling. The instruction provided covers the requirements for the Climbing Merit Badge. The instruction will be provided on-location with multiple destinations* available as options. Climbing equipment and instructor provided.Climbing Badge
