McCall Provides Challenge Match to Scholarship Fund

At the recent annual Scholarship Banquet at Southwest Virginia Community College, Priscilla McCall, wife of the late Sam G. McCall, Jr. provided a challenge match to SWCC for the “50 Years. Forward Educational Scholarship.”  As part of the 50 Year Anniversary Celebration, SWCC planned to raise $50,000 to endow a scholarship that might go on in perpetuity. The endowed scholarship would be a lasting legacy in honor of the first five decades of the college’s service to the community.  The endowed scholarship would provide a $2000-$2500 annual scholarship to a deserving student.   After learning of the plan, McCall decided to pledge the initial $50,000 as a challenge match so that a total of $100,000 might be raised.

The 50 Years. Forward Educational scholarship will be awarded to a student who has demonstrated academic achievement, leadership skills, community service initiatives and who will represent SWCC as a student ambassador. If the goal is met, the scholarship will be awarded for the first time in the Fall of the 2018-2019 Academic Year.

Dr. J. Mark Estepp, president of SWCC said, “I commend the level of generosity of the McCall Family and their gift to SWCC and our students.

“The McCall Family has always been so supportive of SWCC and our mission.  We were overjoyed to learn of Priscilla’s commitment to our 50 Years. Forward Scholarship goal.  With this challenge match we have the potential of providing an up to $5,000 annual scholarship to a deserving student each year. What an amazing opportunity for one of our students!” Susan Lowe, executive director of the SWCC Educational Foundation and Development.
