Cedar Bluff, VA – March 12, 2026 – Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) announces the appointment of Dr. Bethany D. Rose as the College’s next Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs, effective March 10, 2026. Dr. Rose’s selection follows a highly competitive search process and reflects her proven record of academic leadership, student-centered service, and strategic vision.
Dr. Rose brings an extensive background in higher education, instructional excellence, and program development, grounded in more than a decade of service to SWCC. She has most recently served as the College’s Interim Vice President of Academic and Student Services, providing institutional leadership during a period of transition. In this capacity, she played an essential role in leading accreditation efforts, strengthening statewide partnerships, supporting faculty hiring and development, and coordinating initiatives that advance both academic quality and the overall student experience.
Prior to her interim leadership role, Dr. Rose served as Dean of Health Technologies, overseeing eight health programs and leading major accreditation and program evaluation initiatives. Her earlier work as Assistant Professor of Nursing and Instructor of Nursing reflects her longstanding dedication to teaching excellence, mentoring, innovative simulation-based instruction, and supporting student success. Her professional background also includes substantial clinical experience across multiple nursing specialties, demonstrating her commitment to community health and workforce development.
Dr. Rose holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing Education from Liberty University, a Master of Science in Nursing (Nurse Educator) from King University, and both RN and LPN credentials from Southwest Virginia Community College. She is an active contributor to state- and system-level initiatives through the Virginia Community College System, including the Academic and Student Affairs Council, Educational Programs Council, and Transfer Virginia.
In announcing her appointment, President Clint Hayes emphasized Dr. Rose’s strategic mindset and collaborative leadership style. “Dr. Rose brings a blend of strategic vision and innovative leadership that aligns closely with SWCC’s mission and priorities. She brings a collaborative, student-centered approach and will guide major initiatives that strengthen instructional quality, enhance student support, and advance enrollment and retention strategies.”
As Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs and Chief Academic Officer, Dr. Rose will oversee all academic divisions, student success services, workforce and program development, and cross-college initiatives focused on improving learning outcomes and meeting regional workforce needs.
