Southwest Virginia Community College\u2019s School of the Arts will be hosting a dance performance featuring the Southwest Virginia Community College Dance Department opening for Richmond Ballet, The State Ballet of Virginia on Thursday, April 7th<\/sup>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Southwest Virginia Community College\u2019s Dance Department will present, A Hymn Undone: An Appalachian Awakening.<\/em> The works presented are centered on Appalachian culture and the effects of the global pandemic on the local economy. Combining traditional Appalachian folk music with classical dance forms, choreographers\/directors Olivia Ratliff and Regina Rice have created a dynamic experience that embraces the colorful traditions of Appalachia.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Richmond Ballet, The State Ballet of Virginia, presents three diverse works which highlight the versatility, dynamic energy, and intense emotion for which Richmond Ballet is known. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

George Balanchine\u2019s Allegro Brillante is an explosion of sparkling footwork and challenging choreography which Balanchine himself described as \u201ceverything I know about classical ballet in 13 minutes.\u201d In an excerpt from Colin Connor\u2019s Vestiges, two dancers display their undeniable connection, reminiscent of a moth to a flame. Rounding out the program is Richmond Ballet Associate Artistic Director Ma Cong\u2019s Glare; Cong\u2019s undeniably emotive signature movement, along with an extraordinary score by David McAlmont and Michael Nyman, are the base for this powerful work that reflects the human experience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This free event will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, 2022, in Southwest Virginia Community College’s Charles R. King Community Center. The performance is a special addition to the CART season with members admitted with their CART membership card. Donations will be accepted at the door.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The residency by the Richmond Ballet<\/em> is made possible through special funding from the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
