With a $588,072 grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC), Southwest Virginia Community College (Southwest) is in the process of launching an Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Training Center<\/strong> in an existing facility on the main campus. The College has reorganized the maintenance operations on campus and consolidating all functions to operate out of a single building rather than two. The vacant maintenance building is available to be used as the site for the ASE Training Center.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Southwest is creating an Automotive\nDiagnostics and Repair Career Studies Certificate<\/strong> program that will consist\nof a credit-based, fast-track, short-term curriculum to prepare students for\nentry-level automotive technician positions. In Phase 1, Southwest will offer\nspecialized curricula and certifications in conjunction with the Snap-On Education Program<\/strong> and the National Coalition of Certifications\nCenters (NC3)<\/strong>. In Phase 2, National\nInstitute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE)<\/strong> student certifications\nwill be integrated into the curriculum.  In\nPhase 3, Southwest will secure full\naccreditation<\/strong> from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence\n(ASE).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The automotive, transportation, heavy-duty, and\ndiesel fields are going through a period of unprecedented transformation,\ntherefore, training and certification in the latest technologies is becoming\nmore and more critical.  The median\nsalary for these positions is $28,558\/year. \nExperienced workers can earn up to $46,465. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, 31\ncompanies posted 271 jobs<\/strong> for Automotive Specialty Technicians within a\n50-mile radius of the College. Recent postings included Goodyear Tire, Army\nNational Guard, Wal-Mart stores, Bridgestone Corporation, Limestone Dust\nCorporation, Chrysler, Hyundai, and Wallace Collision Center. While many\nindividual businesses may only employ from 2-9 technicians, the large number of\nbusinesses needing to hire automotive technicians contributes to a\nsubstantially inadequate labor pool in the region.  Graduates\nof the program would be eligible for jobs as\nautomotive technicians, automotive service managers, service writers, service\nadvisors, heavy <\/strong>equipment technicians, small engineer repair technicians,\nand warranty administrators.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Program Description:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Southwest will develop curricula for\nthe Automotive Diagnostic and Program in conjunction with the Snap-On Education Program<\/strong> and the National Coalition of Certifications\nCenters (NC3)<\/strong>. This will allow\nthe College to leverage more than 90\nyears of industry knowledge and tool expertise<\/strong> of the Snap-On program in\nthe development of product certification courses.  The courses will serve as a significant\nenhancement to the curricula currently taught in today\u2019s technical classrooms.\nThese certification courses place emphasis on tool use, theory and application\n\u2013 three areas that make students more well-rounded, skilled and proficient on\nthe job. The certifications are not an add-on, but rather are integrated into\nthe existing courses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The goal for specialized curricula and certifications\nis to provide conformity and an across-the-board standard for training centers\nto teach instruction on the three areas of tool\nuse, theory and application<\/strong>. The certification training is a collaborative\neffort between Snap-on and the National Coalition of Certification Centers\n(NC3), which is a network of education partners and corporations that supports\nadvances in workforce skills in the transportation, aviation, manufacturing and\nenergy sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Southwest will offer Snap-On certifications in the\nfollowing areas: Automotive Scanner\nDiagnostics, Electronic and Mechanical Torque, Wheel Service and Alignment;\nRotor Matching Master Technician Certification.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Southwest is\nconfident this initiative presents an excellent investment that will yield a\nmeasurable return on investment because it will prepare workers for\nhighly-skilled, high-demand jobs and have a very positive impact on the local\neconomy.
