CEDAR BLUFF, VA \u2014<\/strong> Southwest Virginia Community College is delighted to announce that Corey M. Whited has been selected as part of the prestigious Valley Proteins Fellows Program. Of the nearly 250,000 people Virginia\u2019s Community College\u2019s serve across the commonwealth each year, only 10 are selected for the Valley Proteins Fellows program. In addition to financial support, the Valley Proteins Fellows Program provides recipients with mentoring, coaching, networking, and leadership opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whited, of Richlands, Va., first attended Southwest Virginia Community College as a dual enrollment student at Richlands High School and is currently in his second year at Southwest studying Pre-Med and Advance Studies in Science. During his time at Southwest, Corey has been President of the Student Government Association, President of the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society, a Southwest Ambassador, and is also a TRIO peer tutor. Due to his outstanding academic achievement, Corey has also been consistently listed on the Honor\u2019s and Dean\u2019s lists at Southwest Virginia Community College. He is also very passionate about his community and spends much of his time volunteering, including participating in Southwest\u2019s tri-annual Eagle Project Day of Service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of his selection to the Valley Proteins Fellowship, Whited stated; “I am certainly honored and humbled by the opportunity to serve as one of the 2020-2021 Valley Protein Fellows. This has opened up many opportunities for me to succeed and excel in my higher education journey to hopefully one day becoming a Physician and serving my community here in SWVA… a community that I love so dear and has given me so many opportunities!”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Working hand in hand with Virginia\u2019s 23 community colleges, the Virginia Foundation for Community College Education seeks to guarantee financial assistance to all students who dream of attending college. The foundation is building an endowment that is already generating interest to provide full scholarships to selected community college students; helping more Virginia foster youth pursue and complete higher education through its Great Expectations program; and leading a partnership to improve rural Virginia\u2019s education pipeline through the Rural Virginia Horseshoe Initiative.
