Southwest Virginia Community College’s Workforce and Continuing Education Program completed the first cohort of the newly launched Diesel Repair Program in December, 2022 at the Southern Gap Transportation and Logistics Center in Buchanan County, Va.

Using a blend of classroom and hands-on instruction, participants in the classes and training earned a mix of nationally recognized certifications.

Some of the credentials earned by those completing the program include American Service Excellence® (ASE), Snap-On® certifications, American Welding Society SMAW certification, and Commercial Driver’s License training.

Upon successful completion, students who complete the program will obtain the necessary knowledge to pursue the career of a certified Diesel Repair Mechanic Technician within the diesel industry. A new set of students are enrolled in the latest cohort of the Diesel Repair Program and will complete the training and classes later this year.

In addition to the Diesel Repair program, Southwest offers a Commercial Driver’s License program (CDL), AWS Welding, other credentialing programs such as SNAP-ON® certifications, and other in-demand workforce training at the 23,000 sqft. Center in the Southern Gap area of Buchanan County.

The Southern Gap Transportation and Logistics Center project has been made possible through a partnership of the Buchanan County IDA, the Virginia Coalfield Economic Development Authority (VCEDA), and Southwest Virginia Community College.
