Southwest Athletics Information

Important Update

Southwest Virginia Community College will conclude its Athletics program at the end of the 2025-2026 academic year. Our priority is supporting student-athletes during this transition with resources for academic success, transfer opportunities, NJCAA guidance, and mental health support.

Questions & Answers

Rationale & Process

  • Q: Why is the College ending Athletics?
A: After a comprehensive review of resources, student participation, and long-term feasibility, we determined that continuing collegiate athletics is not sustainable for the College. This decision allows us to focus resources on our academic mission and student services while continuing to offer a strong campus experience through other engagement opportunities.
  • Q: Was there an alternative to ending Athletics?
A: We evaluated multiple options, including program reductions and fundraising scenarios. Ultimately, none provided a sustainable long-term path that aligned with our academic mission and student needs.

Student-Athlete Support

  • Q: What happens to current student-athletes?
A: We are working individually with student athletes on academic advising, transfer guidance, and eligibility planning, including timelines, transcripts, and coach-to-coach outreach when requested by students.
  • Q: Will scholarships or aid be affected?
A: Students will retain any previously awarded institutional aid for the 2025-2026 academic year, consistent with award terms. We will advise each student on their specific aid package and any transfer considerations.
  • Q: Will athletes be released from letters of intent/commitments?
A: Yes. We will promptly provide the necessary documentation and eligibility information to support transfers where requested by the student.
  • Q: Will there still be sports opportunities on campus?
A: We will continue to offer club activities and are exploring intramural sports and expanded recreation and wellness programming so students can stay active and connected.

Employees & Coaches

  • Q: What happens to coaches and athletics staff?
A: Human Resources is coordinating with Athletics staff regarding contract timelines, transition support, and internal job opportunities where applicable. We’re committed to a respectful and transparent process.
