The Richlands Open Tennis Tournament will celebrate its thirty-seventh year during play
June 16-20, 2019 at the B. J. “ Bob” and Nona Nassif Tennis Courts at Southwest Virginia Community College. Mary Ann Strong serves as Tournament Chair with Joey Trivette and Jason Vencill as Tournament Directors. David Ascue and Rod Moore also serve on the Tournament Committee. Strong says that “even though Bob and Nona have relocated, the tournament that was lovingly directed by Bob for 33 years is alive and well. While they have moved from the area, their hearts are with us in Richlands and at SWCC. We expect to continue in the “Mr. Richlands” tradition to have a very successful tournament.”
The proceeds from the tournament will go to Southwest Virginia Community College for their scholarship program, with tax-deductible gifts being made to the SWCC Educational Foundation. This support provides scholarships for students at SWCC, in the Music Program, which is one of the Nassif’s passions. Over the years, the tennis tournament has raised thousands of dollars for scholarships to be awarded to deserving students.
Jason Vencill is the Athletic Director and Joey Trivette is the Tennis Coach for the newly organized Athletic Program at SWCC. Vencill and Trivette both “encourage members of area high school tennis teams to participate in the tournament and to consider applying to SWCC for the fall 2019 to play on the male and female tennis teams.”
There are thirteen Categories of Participation for ages 13 and under to Century Doubles (combined ages must total at least 100) in singles and doubles play for children, men, women and mixed doubles. The registration fee is $10 per person per category of participation if paid by
June 3rd. After June 3rd, the registration late fee is $15 per category of participation. Each evening, participants will be eligible for prizes. The grand prize will be tickets to the Winston-Salem Open Tennis Tournament and will be given away on June 20. Players will receive a commemorative
