Southwest Virginia Community College has named Dr. Ron E. Proffitt this year’s Distinguished Alumni Award recipient. Proffitt, who served at Southwest as Interim Vice President of Instruction and Student Services and retired as President of Virginia Highlands Community College, will be the guest speaker at this year’s commencement.
Dr. Proffitt’s educational path began at Tazewell High School and continued at Southwest Virginia Community College. His academic journey expanded to include a Diploma in Radiography from the Holston Valley Community Hospital School of Radiologic Technology in Kingsport, Tennessee. He later earned a Regents Bachelor of Arts Degree from Bluefield State College, a master’s degree in Vocational-Technical Education from Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and an Ed.D. from East Tennessee State University.
He has held several other leadership roles throughout his career, including Administrative Director of Radiology at Bristol Regional Medical Center, and multiple roles at Southwest, including Program Director and Instructor of Radiologic Technology and Dean of Math, Science, and Health Technologies. His work has contributed to developing and improving various programs and initiatives, and he has been recognized for his leadership and commitment to excellence.
