CEDAR BLUFF, VA – The Southwest Virginia Community College Educational Foundation recently celebrated the grand opening and donor recognition for the Eliza Hagerman Pavilion at the Appalachian Arts & Events Center. The outdoor addition to the facility features a stage and a fireplace designed by brick sculptor Johnny Hagerman, who has built multiple brick sculpting pieces on the main campus of Southwest Virginia Community College and throughout Southwest Virginia.
The pavilion, named in memory of Johnny’s mother, Eliza Hagerman, enhances the center’s ability to host a variety of private or public outdoor events and performances. The fireplace design is deeply rooted in Appalachia, from the thimble-shaped chimney to the custom blockwork you will find themes of Appalachian Quilting and references to local wildlife such as flying geese and bear paws.
Construction of the pavilion was funded by community donors. Major donors, named the “Baker’s Dozen” were recognized at the event with one of a kind commemorative brick sculptures from Johnny Hagerman. All donors also have their names featured in the brickwork around the stage.
