Southwest Virginia Community College faculty, students and community members traveled to the Iberian Peninsula over spring break. This international initiative to Madrid, Spain and Lisbon, Portugal reflects the institution’s continued commitment to fostering global awareness, cross‑cultural engagement, and applied learning beyond the traditional classroom environment.
Throughout the program, students had structured learning experiences designed to deepen their understanding of the historical, cultural, and social significance of both cities. The group explored the rich cultural heritage while highlighting similarities from early settlers in Appalachia. Kyle England, one of our second-year nursing students, shared “I really appreciate what Southwest has done for me. It has given me the chance to go and explore many place that I would not have been able to without this opportunity.” Studying abroad equips students with a broadened international perspective that is meaningful to their academic, professional, and personal development.
