Record Number of Students Earn an Associate Degree in High School

A record setting number of dual-enrollment students at Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) are being awarded the Governor’s Medallion for earning an associate degree while still in high school.

The Dual Enrollment programs offered at Southwest allow eligible high-school students to enroll in college coursework while still in high school. Courses are taught by full or part-time faculty who meet the Virginia Community College System’s credentialing requirements.

The following students are candidates for graduation at Southwest and will be allowed to wear the Governor’s Medallion at the college’s commencement on Friday, May 12, 2023 and at their local high school graduation as well.

Grundy High School

Allison Blankenship – General Studies, Associate of Arts & Science

Jessica Looney – General Studies, Associate of Arts & Science

Emma McClanahan – (2 Medallions) General Studies, Associate of Arts & Science, Uniform Certificate General Studies

Alexsis Porter – General Studies, Associate of Arts & Science

Heileigh Vencill – General Studies, Associate of Arts & Science

Richlands High School

Anna Hrovatic – (2 Medallions) General Studies, Associate of Arts & Science, Uniform Certificate General Studies

Tazewell High School 

Talen Nunley – General Studies, Associate of Arts & Science

The gymnasium at Southwest is setup and ready for commencement on Friday, May 12, 2023.

To be eligible for dual enrollment, high school juniors or seniors attending a public or private school (exceptional freshman and sophomores may be eligible with approval from both high school principal and college president) must meet or exceed college placement requirements and receive a recommendation from a high school official. Parental written consent is required prior to student enrollment. Students interested in Dual Enrollment should speak with high school staff regarding eligibility. Home-schooled students are also eligible for the program and are urged to contact SWCC to discuss options.
