Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) is launching a new 12-week Fiber Optic Technician course on its main campus. Students can earn the Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT®) credential through the Fiber Optic Association, with the first cohort starting August 26, 2024.
As an added benefit, students can also obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) through the college’s existing CDL program, enhancing their skill set and employability.
A pole yard has been installed on the main campus for students to learn essential skills in pole climbing and working with various utility lines, including fiber optics, electricity, cable, telephone, and other communication cables.
The CFOT® certification program covers:
Students will engage in hands-on lab exercises, gaining practical experience in splicing, termination, and testing. To support this new initiative, a new pole yard has been installed on campus for students to train on.
The CFOT® certification is widely recognized in the industry and is suitable for contractors, installers, consultants, network designers, estimators, and trainers. This program is a FastForward-eligible program. FastForward is offered through all 23 of Virginia’s Community Colleges. It is a financial assistance program that rewards students who complete training and earn a high-demand industry certification. In addition to funding and incentives only offered at Virginia’s Community Colleges, students can access campus resources and student benefits by training at a community college and exploring the next steps for future education.
