Message from the President
SWCC’s vision is to transform lives, strengthen communities and inspire excellence. As only the 3rd president to serve in SWCC’s 50-year history, I am truly honored and excited to lead SWCC as we continue fulfilling this vision in the future.
At SWCC, student success is our primary mission. Our program paths are designed to set you on the right course to your career goal, whether that goal includes a transfer path or short-term job training. Our Workforce Solutions Department offers state of the art training to prepare you, or your employees, to achieve nationally recognized credentials.

SWCC hosts and supports a variety of cultural and academic programs throughout the year. These programs and events provide our students and community an opportunity to engage with a diverse and vibrant world of ideas, music, art and drama, as well as foster an appreciation of the rich cultural heritage of our region.
As Tracey and I begin to make Southwest Virginia our home, we look forward to meeting and getting to know our neighbors, business and community partners. My door is always open, and I welcome your input, ideas and concerns, as we work together to strengthen and enrich the lives of our students, and our communities, through education and development.
Dr. Tommy F. Wright
Dr. Tommy F. Wright was formally installed as SWCC’s 3rd president on October 26, 2018 by VCCS Chancellor Dubois
About Dr. Wright
In his professional career, he served as the Vice President of Finance and Advancement at Cleveland State Community College, a position he held from 2010 until his presidency at Southwest. Dr. Wright also served from 1997 until 2010 at Appalachian State University inBoone, North Carolina, where he rose through several administrative posts, culminating in Director of Administrative Support Services. In addition, he served in multiple housing and residence life roles with increasing responsibility, before he was selected to serve as the interim Assistant Dean of Students at Middle Tennessee State University. His first full time position was in 1993 at Brevard College, Brevard, North Carolina, where he served as Resident Director and Assistant Director of Housing.
Dr. Wright Was the first in his family to earn a college degree. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mass Communications and a Master of Education and Education Specialist in Administration and Supervision from Middle Tennessee State University. He received a Doctorate of Education in Administration and Supervision at Tennessee State University.
Dr. Wright and his wife, Tracey, have two daughters and they enjoy being actively engaged with community organizations. They currently enjoy attending high school activities with their youngest daughter. Dr. Wright and his family are excited to be a part of the southwest Virginia community.
